Chipboard vs. Corrugated

Chipboard vs. Corrugated

What is Corrugated?
Many know and understand the functionality and composition of corrugated. Several sources of information are readily available detailing the grades and applicable certification of corrugated materials. Below is a short description of the many grades we find successful for manufacturing corrugated partitions. We encourage your questions to determine which grad and coating, if any, meets your application.

What is Chipboard?

CHIPBOARD is usually made up of 70% recycled material and 30% old corrugated material. Innerpac has spent many years cultivating critical SUPPLIER relationships to compete with the integrated producers of fiber and corrugated, to remain competitive.

Chipboard vs. Corrugated

Chipboard partitions have a number of advantages over single wall corrugated partitions.

Factor Chipboard Single Wall Corrugated Advantages
Factory & warehouse space savings X   Chipboard partitions take up only 25% to 33% as much space as corrugated partitions.
Transportation cost savings X   Since three to four times as many chipboard partitions can be shipped per truckload, freight savings are substantial.
Dust-free X   Corrugated partitions are often sawed rather than die cut. Sawing produces much higher dust levels.
Carton savings X   A smaller carton size can result when converting from corrugated to solid fibre partitions.
Stacking strength X X Corrugated has better stacking strength often required for certain applications.
Lower cost X   Recycled chipboard is typically a lower cost material compared to corrugated.
Better product protection X   Chipboard is a solid material. There is no risk of flute collapse so products stay tightly packed.
Many styles & optional features X   Chipboard partitions are manufactured in a number of different styles with more optional features available such as notching, locking, and entry features.
Automated operations X   Chipboard partitions may be custom designed for automatic erection and insertion operations.
Dimensional accuracy X   Chipboard partitions are generally more dimensionally accurate than corrugated, holding tolerances as close as 1/64".
Cushioning effect X   Corrugated partitions generally provide additional cushioning needed primarily for glass applications.

A Case Study: The Selling Advantage Three-Fold

A Customer is presently buying 2,000 corrugated boxes and partitions. The box size is 19-1/4" x 16-1/16" x 4". The 30 cell corrugated partition is arranged 6 x 5. If we change the corrugated partition to.040 chipboard, we shrink the box 1/8" for each slot in the partition. The new box size is 18-1/8" x 15-1/8" x 4".

(Note: .040 chipboard has approximately the same mullen as 200# c-flute corrugated.)

Original box cost 2,000 @ $582.00 $1,164.00
New box cost 2,000 @ $537.00 $1,074.00
Savings   $90.00
Cost of corrugated partition 2,000 @$596.00 $1,192.00
Cost of chipboard partition 2,000 @ $347.00 $694.00
Savings   $498.00
